WHAT!!! This is supposed to be a website hailing sg-1!
Well calm down kidda, keep your hair on, I mean, we all adore Stargate, and love it and everything... but sometimes the flaws in it are SOOOOOO obvious and stupid we can't help but laugh. Read on to pick holes in the (not so intricatly crafted) fabric of Stargate SG-1.
Children of the Gods-
The Stargate seems to have been moved to a nearly identical facilty in Cheyenne mountain. We can tell this because of the small differencs in the film.
All of the Abdonians seem to have aquired a great deal of English fron Daniel in the single year he has been there. I find this highly unrealistic, and think there should have been more bad grammar, poor accents and mis-use of words, if only to make me feel better about my poor spanish skills.
O'Neill has changed his name! The last bloke in the movie spelt his name with one l.
Why wasn't the Stargate buried or destroyed when O'Neill returned from the first mission to Abydos?
Why was there a Stargate address room on Abydos? Will there be other map rooms found on other planets? Or was Abydos of particular importance to the builders of the system?
Watergate-
In this episode, when the submarine is being winched into the water, the metal cord on the pulleys is not taught. With the weight of the submarine, it probably should be. The word 'cheap' comes to mind.
Reetou-
It was established that Reetou could be seen under a special kind of light. So why not install one of those lights in the Gateroom over the gate? It does seem logical.
The Broca Divide-
When Jack took Sam to the infirmiry after she er... tried to seduce him, she was in BDUs, but when she was restrained in the infirmary, she is in blue hospital scrubs. Why? Also, Jack's shirt is in one piece when he is attacked by Sam, by when he is walking with Doc. Frasier his black shirt is ripped on the sleeve. Now unless this man has a major problem with clothing, then this is a really bad costume mistake.
Entity-
No real panic or concern is shown until the entty invades Sam. I think if the idea was real, there would have been more emotion, but a good episode, none the less.
The entity in the episode chose Sam to invade because it knew this one was of value (O'Neill would not be willing to destroy this one). But how could it know that from the SGC files?
Also, when Sam's soul leaves her body, it floats up an SGC corridor to... what? Later the message "I'm here." appears on a computer screen. Well sure, you're there, but how?
And, courtesy of Siaza:
In the original movie, Catherine shows Daniel a picture of his
family and he tells her they are foster parents but the kid in the picture is
like two years old and later in the series (Crystal Skull) we find out that
Daniel's parents died when he was eight. In the Serpent's Grasp also has a
definite flaw when Daniel is shot by the staff weapon, there is a huge bloody
hole in his clothes but when he gets out of the sarcophagus, his clothes are
undamaged, and in that same episode, how is it that it took so long for
Klorel to be revived and it took Daniel only a couple minutes?
Cheers, Siaza!
From Louise Matthews:
"I've got this one thing that i noticed watching one or two episodes resently, you know how they changed to using the beta gate after the replicater thing? Well, didn't it have a different 'home' glyph? Which was how Sam didn't know that she was really on earth? The thing is, it seems to now have the same home glyph, you know the old pyramid with a circle on top, and so in fact do a lot of the places that SGC teams have been gating to's stargates,
Just thought that it might be interesting to see if anyone else had noticed."
Thank you!
From Claudia:
I was surfing your site and was enjoying your flaws page (because it's always fun to nitpick!). Anyway, since you were asking for more, I thought I'd throw in my expertise as a member of the Air Force. I've noticed a few things, mainly in the pilot episode, Children of the Gods, that have bothered me.
The most glaringly obvious (to someone in the military anyway) is the airman in the elevator with Jack (as he is riding down to the SGC for the first time in the episode right before he meets up with Samuels again) has incorrect rank on. He has Major (officer) insignia on his shoulders/epaulets, but also Staff Sergeant (enlisted) chevrons on his arms. One is either an officer, or enlisted, but not both, you can not be two ranks. Someone in costuming messed up there! Plus there was a lot of saluting that was wrong. For the most part, the military does not salute indoors. The Air Force only salutes indoors for ceremonies (the Navy doesn't salute indoors at all!), such as when Carter was promoted to Major, when the General gave Carter and O'Neill their Air Medals, and the honor guard in "Fire and Water" performing Daniel's memorial service. It was not correct for all the saluting in the pilot episode at the briefing such as when Carter saluted O'Neill and when all the officers saluted the general when he entered. In that situation, proper military protocol is to call the room to attention when the General enters, but not to salute. The show seemed to correct this as it went on and I haven't noticed mistakes like this since early in the first season. Another nitpick is from the 4th season episode Prodigy and the 5th season episode Proving Ground. In Prodigy, Cadet Hailey gets in trouble for fighting with an upperclassman, meaning she's at most a Junior at the Academy. But the next year, in Proving Ground, she's suddenly a Lieutenant, meaning she's graduated. To my knowledge, you can not graduate early from the AF Academy, even if you transfer credits from another school, you go for 4 years. So Hailey should have still been a cadet during Proving Ground.
One last nitpick (I have more, but that's really nitpicking!) is whether or not Carter's a pilot. Oh and while I'm on this topic, :) another change from the movie is that in the movie, Jack wears pilot wings and no other career field badge (the silver badges opposite the name tag with the "Blues" uniform) but in the show, he wears "Jump Wings" (which is consistent with his character's background) and the Space/Missile badge. To qualify for the Space/Missile badge, you have to have either worked for a year in a Space unit for a year, or attended the Missile school at Vandenberg AFB, California, and it is a year long course and pretty hard to my knowledge. I really doubt Jack attended this school, but I'm assuming the SGC qualifies as a Space unit. :) Also, you could probably argue that he wears it as part of their cover of "Deep Space Radar Telemetry". Jump Wings means he's attended the Army Jump school at Fort Bragg. :) Actually, now that I think about it, Jack might have had a missiler badge (different from the Space/Missile badge) in the Movie as well. That's the long one going down the pocket of his Service Dress uniform. Now, to wear that, I believe you do have to have attended the Missiler school, or sit in a missile silo for a year or so (which you have to attend the school to do). Really doubt he did that.
So, as to whether or not Sam's a pilot, (lines in the pilot episode make it seem she flew F-16's in the Gulf War). She only wears the Space/Missile badge, which is consistent with her character's background but why doesn't she wear wings if she's a rated pilot?. Now, since she's really smart, and wanted to be an astronaut, I could see her going the pilot track, and she'd need to get a PhD to be competitive for that, but pilot training is two years, and they tend not to let you do anything else afterwards as it cost so much to train you, plus they're always short pilots. So, if she were a pilot, even though she doesn't fly anymore (ignoring the occasional spacecraft:) she would still qualify to wear wings, and wings are a very big deal. Being a rated officer (rated meaning you are either a pilot, navigator, or other flight crew) is a big deal, and is looked favorably on promotions and other things. It's very hard to become a General without being rated (notice both General Hammond and Sam's dad both are rated). You can do it, there are non-rated General officer slots, but not very many. So, if Sam were rated, that would definitely be a badge she would wear. So why doesn't she wear them? If she had "100 hours over enemy airspace" like she said in the pilot episode, she would have been flight crew of some kind!
Wow- she pays attention! Thanks Claudia!!
